Reds hope O'Connor will join Cooper

The Queensland Rugby Union hopes Quade Cooper's decision to re-sign will help lure rising star James O'Connor home to Queensland.

Cooper's new contract with the Australian Rugby Union will ensure he remains with the Reds until the end of next year.

Reds coach, Ewen McKenzie says he is optimistic he can entice O'Connor back to Brisbane.

"I'm confident. I mean while you're in it there's nothing to tell me that we aren't a prospect," he said.

"All the discussions we've had have been around a rugby-oriented decision.

"I think we can offer a fair bit in that space. I think Quade putting his hand up isn't going to hurt us either, he's obviously a good mate (to O'Connor)."
