France calls up two new caps

Updated January 26, 2012 23:05:10

France coach Philippe Saint-Andre named uncapped lock Yoann Maestri and centre Wesley Fofana in his squad for the opening Six Nations championship match against Italy at the Stade de France on February 4.

Saint-Andre, who took over from Marc Lievremont after last year's World Cup, included 17 players from the squad who lost the final against hosts New Zealand by a point, including 14 of the starting line-up.

Prop David Attoub, who had not been named in the initial 30-man squad this month, was a surprise inclusion because of Luc Ducalcon's lack of match time with Castres.

France squad: Morgan Parra, Dimitri Yachvili, Francois Trinh-Duc, Lionel Beauxis, Aurelien Rougerie, Maxime Mermoz, Wesley Fofana, Vincent Clerc, Julien Malzieu, Maxime Medard, David Attoub, Vincent Debaty, Nicolas Mas, Jean-Baptiste Poux, William Servat, Dimitri Szarzewski, Pascal Pape, Yoann Maestri, Lionel Nallet, Julien Bonnaire, Thierry Dusautoir, Louis Picamoles, Imanol Harinordoquy

Springboks name new coach

Updated January 27, 2012 21:23:17

Former Bulls mentor Heyneke Meyer has been named as the new South Africa coach.

The 44-year-old Meyer steered the Bulls to four Currie Cup titles between 2002 and 2006 and then their first Super 14 crown in 2007.

Meyer succeeds the controversial Peter de Villiers, who won a single Tri-Nations title and beat the British and Irish Lions in 2009 before guiding the Springboks to the quarter-finals of last year's World Cup in New Zealand.

Meyer had initially been the favourite to succeed Jake White in 2008 when De Villiers was appointed, and he subsequently quit rugby before joining Leicester in June 2008.

South Africa approves Kings for Super Rugby

Updated January 28, 2012 10:33:38

One of South Africa's existing teams in the Super Rugby competition faces the axe after the Southern Kings secured a place in the tournament from 2013, the South African Rugby Union (SARU) said.

The inclusion of the Kings, who hail from Eastern Cape - the hotbed of black rugby, has left the Stormers, Sharks, Bulls, Cheetahs and Lions facing an uncertain future.

One of the five teams will be out of the lucrative tournament unless SARU can convince SANZAR (South Africa-New Zealand-Australia Rugby) to allow a sixth South African team to play in the competition.

"The Kings' place in the Super Rugby competition in 2013 was confirmed by the general council, who gave it 100 per cent support," SARU chief executive Jurie Roux told a news conference.

"A final decision on the fate of the other five franchises will be made at a special general meeting on March 30 after the council has considered recommendations by the unions. There are a number of options, including asking SANZAR to include a sixth South African team."

The Southern Kings inclusion in Super Rugby has been backed by politicians and those unhappy with the pace of transformation in South African rugby.

None of their constituent teams - Eastern Province, South-Western Districts and Border - play in the premier division of South Africa's domestic Currie Cup competition.

Eastern Province were beaten 43-12 by Boland in last year's first division final.

Reds ahead of Test ambitions for McKenzie

Updated January 21, 2012 09:25:20

Super Rugby-winning coach Ewen McKenzie has put a desire to build a Queensland Reds dynasty before his Wallabies ambitions by re-signing until the end of 2014.

McKenzie, who has transformed the Reds from cellar-dwellers to champions in just two years in charge, has agreed to extend his contract by an extra 12 months.

The surprise extension has serious ramifications on a national level with Wallabies coach Robbie Deans's contract expiring at the end of 2013.

McKenzie looms as a natural successor, especially after Australian Rugby Union boss John O'Neill admitted in October he featured extensively in the governing body's succession plan.

But the Queensland Rugby Union believes New Zealander Deans will again be reappointed after the British and Irish Lions tour in two years time "unless the wheels fell off".

QRU chief executive Jim Carmichael and chairman Rod McCall, though, indicated McKenzie's extended deal would not necessarily preclude him from ascending to the national coaching post.

"That's a fair way down the track and there would have to be a fair amount of dialogue that all parties are involved in to allow the delivery to be right for the game," Carmichael said.

McKenzie said the motivation behind his decision was to finish the job he had been recruited for - leaving a legacy for what had been a fractured code in Queensland's highly-competitive sporting market.

"There's an attraction to be around and see that all through," he said.

"We are only in control of our own environment and we've done a good job in the last couple of years but there's still a lot of work to be done."

While the 51-Test former prop is highly-regarded as Deans's heir apparent, due to the Reds' attacking style as well as their success, McKenzie stressed there were no guarantees in sport.

"Rugby is a moveable feast," he said.

"One thing I know about coaching, you've got to be the right bloke at the right time.

"We can only deal with what we know right now."

It is his second contract extension and means he will be in charge at Ballymore for five years - the same length of time he guided NSW until 2008 - by the end of the deal.

McKenzie has twice before been well positioned to coach Australia, knocking back the post in late-2005 to stay on with the Waratahs, and being overlooked in favour of Deans two years later.

With half the Reds squad coming off contract this year, including star halves Will Genia and Quade Cooper, the new deal for the popular mentor is certain to help retention efforts in the face of extra salary cap pressure.

Two of McCall's first calls as chairman in September 2009 was to appoint McKenzie as Reds coach and Carmichael as CEO and they have swiftly pulled the QRU out of the mire.

Queensland finished fifth in 2010 and attracted healthy crowds on the back of an expansive game plan, before winning 15 of 18 matches last season to claim the Super Rugby title.

The transformation has seen membership grow beyond 23,000 - more than cross-code rivals the Broncos, Roar and Lions - and the average attendance climb to 33,000 to have the QRU on the brink of regaining full control of their finances after two years of ARU support.

The GB Lions Dominate the Rugby League Ashes

Chambers seals NRL deal to return to Storm

Updated January 19, 2012 13:58:33

Will Chambers will return to his former NRL club Melbourne after a two-year dalliance with rugby union.

The tall centre has signed a three-year deal with the Storm, who the 23-year-old played 42 games with between 2007 and 2009 before switching codes to play with the Queensland Reds.

Chambers had a topsy-turvy stint in Brisbane, making a quick impression in his first season to be touted as a Wallabies contender before a shoulder injury halted his development.

However, on return from surgery, Chambers spent more time on the bench than on the field as the Reds swept to the Super Rugby title last year.

Chambers was subsequently released by the Reds and joined Irish club Munster on a short-term deal before the Storm's operations manager, Frank Ponissi, travelled to Limerick to discuss a return to Melbourne.

"I have been following Will's progress over the past two years and when I caught up with him in Limerick, it was clear he had a desire to come back to rugby league," said Ponissi.

"Pleasingly we (have completed) our 2012 roster, adding quality depth to our centre position with Dane Nielsen, Maurice Blair and Justin O'Neill."

Chambers, whose last game for Melbourne was in the 2009 grand final-winning team who beat Parramatta - a title later stripped due to the Storm's salary cap rorting - is excited to have sealed a long-term deal following the uncertainty of recent months.

"This was a very difficult decision with several things to consider," Chambers said.

"The overriding factor was a return to Melbourne to be coached by Craig (Bellamy) and being part of the Melbourne Storm culture once again."

Sonny Bill Williams's boxing opponent in jail

Updated January 14, 2012 12:03:25

Plans for All Blacks star and part-time boxer Sonny Bill Williams to fight for the vacant New Zealand heavyweight crown were up in the air on Saturday after it was discovered his would-be opponent is in jail.

Williams was scheduled to fight Richard Tutaki on February 8, just a few weeks before the Super Rugby season gets under way.

But the New Zealand Herald has reported that Tutaki has been arrested and denied bail after failing to turn up in court on drugs charges.

New Zealand Professional Boxing Association president Lance Revill said Williams would still fight next month and a new opponent was being sought.

Tutaki was chosen from a pool of five possible contenders and Revill said the other four were still in training. Williams' manager Khoder Nasser will pick the new opponent.

"Khoder Nasser has got the money and he is putting all the money up for the fight," Revill said.

Williams, a dual rugby union and league international, has had four professional boxing bouts but none against a fighter of note.

His most recent contest last June resulted in a points win over an overweight, 43-year-old, gospel-singing, sickness beneficiary.

Sharpe ponders playing on with Force

Updated January 17, 2012 21:43:39

Western Force skipper Nathan Sharpe has not ruled out the prospect of extending his Super Rugby career into 2013, saying he will make a call on his future over the coming months.

Sharpe, who turns 34 in February, is Super Rugby's most capped player with 147 appearances, while he has also notched 101 Tests for the Wallabies during a glittering international career.

But age has not wearied the powerful lock, who insists motivation is not a problem as he embarks on his 15th Super season.

"Physically I feel really good," Sharpe said on Tuesday as the Force's Wallabies contingent returned to preseason training.

"For me, I've been lucky with injuries thus far.

"The body feels good and I'm still enjoying playing and I just have to assess all the factors that come into my life.

"I'll make a call probably very early on in the season and that's something I'll come to pass in the next couple of months."

After six fruitless seasons at the Force, Sharpe is desperate to guide the club to a maiden finals berth in 2012.

But the Perth-based franchise has already hit a snag in that quest following the sensational resignation of five-eighth Willie Ripia, who was caught allegedly stealing from team-mates.

"I think first and foremost the most important thing is that Willie gets the help he needs to get through this situation," Sharpe said of the NZ-born fly half, who is battling gambling-related issues.

"All the guys thought he was a really nice fella and it's a real shame that it came to pass the way it did.

"But the group's moved on.

"A lot of guys have been in contact with Willie and sent their best with him.

"But the trust in the group is the most important thing and certainly that is something that needs to be paramount in this team and that's what we're working towards."

Red-handed Ripia quits the Force

Updated January 11, 2012 13:22:35

Western Force five-eighth Willie Ripia has quit the Super Rugby franchise after being caught on camera allegedly stealing money from team-mates.

Ripia, 26, was captured on CCTV camera appearing to take players' money in the changerooms at the squad's Perth headquarters.

He resigned after he was informed about the footage last week.

Police are not involved as none of the players who lost money have made an official complaint outside of the club.

It is believed Ripia has been having counselling for gambling problems.

It is also understood players had been complaining for months about money going missing.

Ripia had been previously confronted about the situation, but denied any involvement.

However, it was only when he was told about the recent CCTV footage that he offered his resignation.

The New Zealand-born five-eighth played seven matches last year with the Force after moving across from the Hurricanes for the 2011 season.

His departure is a massive blow for the Force, whose five-eighth stocks are now threadbare following James O'Connor's switch to the Melbourne Rebels.

Half-back James Stannard impressed in the key playmaker's role at the tail-end of 2011.

But the Force are expected to seek special permission from the Australian Rugby Union to replace Ripia, even though the final squad deadlines have already passed.

Reds confident they'll cover Cooper

Updated January 09, 2012 19:11:18

Queensland coach Ewen McKenzie says the temporary loss of playmaker Quade Cooper is an exciting challenge for the defending Super Rugby champions.

Apart from the Wallabies who played on the two-match United Kingdom tour late last year, Cooper was the only Red who did not return to full training on Monday in their first session for 2012.

While the absence of the mercurial Cooper, who continues his recovery from a knee reconstruction, is a blow for the Reds, McKenzie says there are plenty of candidates for the vacant fly half role.

"We're quite excited by the prospect of solving that solution," said McKenzie, who has cited Mike Harris, Ben Lucas, Dallan Murphy and Jono Lance as potential starters in the number 10 jersey.

"Everyone worries about it but we're quite excited by it.

"Each year you're confronted with different situations so the job as a coach is to come up with different solutions.

"It's just like a game of chess really, you've just got to make sure you've got the solutions."

With about six weeks until the competition kick-off, McKenzie says he is in no rush to make a call on his new fly half.

"No-one has an automatic replacement for Quade. It's not so much the skill, it's the thinking and the communication side of it so we've been thinking long and hard about it," McKenzie said.

McKenzie says he feels his side is well placed to become the fourth team in history to win back-to-back Super Rugby titles.

The Reds stormed to an 18-13 win over the Crusaders in the final last year and with that experience under their belt, and only two new faces added to the squad, McKenzie says they are in great shape.

"We've got good depth, we've only brought in six new guys and four of those guys were in the academy training with us last year," he said.

"So there's only two new faces so there's a lot of familiarity.

"We can really start from where we left off, which is important.

"We don't have reinvent massively although we do have to improve."

Meanwhile, the Reds have announced they had extended the contract of 21-year-old back rower Jake Schatz through to the end of 2014, with the promising youngster set to be a long-term replacement for veteran Radike Samo at number eight.

The Reds open their preseason on February 11 against the Brumbies in Cairns, before their round one blockbuster against New South Wales in Sydney on February 25.

SBW on verge of NRL return: report

Updated January 01, 2012 11:16:59

All Black Sonny Bill Williams is reportedly considering joining the Sydney Roosters in 2013 for double the pay he left rugby league for in 2008.

Williams is on the verge of signing a $4 million five-year deal to return to the NRL with the Roosters, The Sunday Telegraph reported.

An agreement was all but finalised over a breakfast meeting in Circular Quay in Sydney on Saturday with Roosters chairman Nick Politis and Channel Nine executive David Gyngell.

Williams was a member of the All Blacks team that won the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

He has a one-season deal with rugby union Super 15 franchise Waikato Chiefs but there has been speculation he will return to league.

He will join the Roosters in 2013 on $800,000 a season, double what he was on when he walked out on the Bulldogs in 2008 to join Toulon in French rugby union, The Telegraph reported.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that a clause in his deed of release from the Bulldogs prohibits him from playing with a rival NRL club until this year.

The All Blacks midfielder is also taking on veteran fighter Richard Tutaki for the vacant New Zealand heavyweight belt on February 8.
